Back In the (Blog) Saddle
I know. I’ve posted this before. And no one likes an excuse. Tedious, really, and ultimately who cares? So I’ll just say: I’m back. Thanks to Meghan Ward (of Writerland), I’m sitting down this Friday morning to post here. “Are you still blogging?” she asked me yesterday at lunch at the Writers’ Grotto. “Every time I go to your blog, it’s the same post.” (She said this in the nicest of ways, really.) It is, indeed. Imagine having a friend repeatedly drop by for a visit and never being there! That’s a little how I felt. Plus, I realized that Meghan’s … Continue reading
The Next Big Thing: My New Project
Thanks to Meghan Ward for inviting me to participate in this blog chain. Meghan is the prize-winning author of a memoir titled Paris On Less Than $10,000 a Day. She blogs at Writerland.com and teaches social media classes at SF Writers’ Grotto. “New” might be pushing it in describing this book, a novel I’m revising, but it’s certainly first and foremost in my writing mind these days. What is the working title of your book? Rincon People Where did the idea come from for this book? I had a dream, an embarrassing number of years ago, of a young boy … Continue reading
Airing the Laundry

Maybe it’s all those years of uncensored diary entries about mad crushes and revenge fantasies and how my mother infuritated me – but getting the words down about real people always came easily. The trick, of course, is when the time comes for those people to see those words. Last month, Meghan Ward posted on her blog, Writerland, about the dangers of airing one’s “family’s dirty laundry.” Publishing words – however honest – about those … Continue reading
Here’s the Story…
Meghan Ward’s post this week on her blog, Writerland, got me thinking. She asks readers about favorite TV shows, names a few of her own, and mentions how good TV can teach “valuable storytelling techniques.” When I was in grad school, one of my fellow TAs showed his Intro to Fiction Writing class an episode of The Brady Bunch to illustrate the importance of conflict, crisis, resolution. I don’t recall which episode it was – Jan’s allergy to the family dog? Marcia’s getting braces? Greg’s being grounded after driving when Mike told him not to? – but it doesn’t matter. … Continue reading
